An impact wrench employs an electric or air motor that uses sudden, high-torque twisting motions to loosen lug nuts. Continuous short and strong bursts of force against the fastener is what brings movement. Impact wrenches are commonly used for tightening and loosening rusted bolts, lug nuts or fasteners.
Generally speaking, air compressor air flow should be at least two to three times the minimum requirement of the impact wrench. Typically impact wrenches will have a listed cubic feet per minute (CFM) rating from the manufacturer based on drive types. For example, a 3/8” drive requires 3 CFM at 90 PSI, a ½“ drive requires a 4to 5 CFM at 90 PSI and a 1” drive requires 8 to 10 CFM at 90 PSI. Need more help? No, you cannot use regular sockets on an impact tool, as it can be dangerous. Regular sockets are not constructed for impact wrench use; they’re less durable because they’re made from a different material, which could lead to the socket shattering. But impact sockets can be used safely on power tools, like impact wrenches.
