FAQs About Crane & Timber Mats
United Rentals has a wide selection of crane and timber mat rentals that are the perfect solution for projects requiring jobsite access, ground protection, temporary roads, work pads, load distribution or the stabilization and support of heavy equipment. Our timber crane mats for rent are available in multiple weight-bearing capacities to meet your project’s specific needs, from light-duty to heavy-duty. All our crane and timber mats are made from durable hardwood timbers or engineered laminated timbers, and many of our mats can be made in custom sizes. We offer timber mat rentals with unique features, such as heavy-duty timber mats with coated ends for rot protection, timber outrigger mats with cable loops for easy lifting and timber transition mats that are ramped to connect roadways on different levels.

While they are very similar, crane mats and timber mats have subtle differences. Crane mats are heavy-duty mats that are specifically designed to support the extremely heavy weight of cranes and other heavy equipment. They are typically thicker and heavier than timber mats. Timber mats range from light-duty to heavy-duty and have broader uses, such as ground protection, temporary roadways and staging areas.
Our timber mats vary in weight depending on size, capacity and manufacturer. United Rentals’ lightest-duty timber mat weighs 1,940 pounds, while our heaviest-duty timber mat weighs up to 10,700 pounds.
Yes, timber and crane mats can be used on uneven terrain. In fact, many of our timber mats are designed to be placed on top of uneven ground such as wetlands, marshes or loose soil to protect the ground and provide access to jobsites.
