Arc welding, also known as stick welding or SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding), uses an electric power supply to create an electric arc between an electrode and the workpiece. This process provides greater penetration but offers less control over heat input. Argon is a type of gas used as a shielding agent to protect welders from extremely high temperatures. It is applied to the metals to prevent a reaction between the heated metal and the other components in the air like nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen. Argon gas also maintains the stability of the arc.
Stick welding — also known as shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) — is one of the most common types of arc welding and uses a flux-coated electrode (the stick) to form the weld.
United Rentals offers a range of welders from top manufacturers. Our experts help you find the exact equipment for your preferred arc welding method and project needs. Check out our Project Uptime article to determine which welder is best for you.
