To determine what size transformer you need, analyze your existing power system and use that information to calculate a corresponding transformer. Consider your input and output voltage, as well as the kVA rating your specific worksite requires. To find the kVA, you’ll need to make a series of calculations based on your specific electrical schematics. Choosing a transformer that meets your energy demands prevents performance challenges caused by overuse and lack of proper maintenance. Learn about how transformer cooling can help avoid utility derating.
United Rentals offers three different types of electrical transformers: step-up, step-down and isolation transformers. Step-up transformers are designed to increase voltage. Step-down transformers decrease voltage. Isolation transformers have isolated primary and secondary windings to reduce voltage spikes in the supply line. Transformers commonly employ multiple types at once. For example, isolation transformers are capable of both stepping up and down voltage levels.
A step-up transformer increases from input to output voltage and is typically used for enhancing and boosting voltage for power equipment with higher voltages. A step-down transformer decreases from input to output voltage, making transmission power cheaper and safer.
