FAQs About Bulldozers
Also called dozers, bulldozers are heavy-duty pieces of earthmoving equipment that use metal plates, or “blades,” to clear sites of waste, excess soil, rubble and other materials. They run on steel or rubber tracks instead of wheels, which helps them move through muddy sites. The different sizes of dozers for rent are categorized by horsepower. The higher the horsepower, the bigger the size and blade capacity. Bulldozers between 70 horsepower and 105 horsepower are considered standard-sized or medium bulldozers; they are used for general construction and can move around smaller jobsites. Bigger, heavier-duty machines used in highway construction and on large sites are 150 horsepower and higher. Learn more about rental bulldozers in our FAQ section below.

A bulldozer may break a stump off the ground or clear fallen trees but could have trouble removing roots. In fact, a large tree stump may damage the blade. Equipment like a backhoe or an excavator with a thumb or breaker attachment can remove tree stumps more easily without damage. You can always contact your local United Rentals branch with project requirements, and a representative will help you choose the best equipment for the job.

For general construction and smaller jobsites, look for smaller, more mobile bulldozers between 70 and 105 horsepower to allow for greater mobility and easier transportation. For road construction or large construction sites, a medium to large bulldozer, between 150 and 200 horsepower, can provide the bucket size and machine power to tackle heavy-duty jobs. Rubber tracks are best suited for projects on softer ground, like agriculture and dirt construction, and can limit potential damage to pavement. Steel tracks are long lasting and heavy duty and are best used for jobsites with inclines and sharp debris.
