FAQs About Forklifts

Warehouse forklifts are the most widely used material-handling equipment in the industry, and there are several types that can be purchased from United Rentals. Our inventory includes reach forklifts that can hoist materials like lumber, bricks or pallets up to several stories high. A gas-powered forklift uses compressed gas to power the material-handling equipment. Rough terrain forklifts use a standard engine for power, and some have multiple engines for increased power to transport materials across muddy or rocky terrain. We also offer smaller battery-powered material-handling equipment that can be used indoors on flat surfaces without causing damage to certain flooring materials by leaving tire marks behind. Check out our Project Uptime article, Forklift Sizes: What to Know About Types, Capacities and Dimensions for more information.

FAQs
Do you need a license to drive a forklift?

Yes, forklift operators need special training before their licenses are issued. Training for forklift certification typically covers the proper operation of forklifts, forklift safety procedures and all applicable local laws. Following the manufacturer's guidelines is necessary to retain forklift certification. United Academy offers operator training for multiple types of forklifts; browse available online and in-person courses.

How often should operators inspect their forklift?

Forklifts and material-handling equipment must be inspected every day before they can go back to work on your site. A material-handler inspection includes a battery test, tire pressure check, forklift safety light check, oil level/condition assessment, steering column lock function test, visual brake pad wear evaluation and other checks according to manufacturer guidelines.

How much does a forklift weigh?

Forklifts can weigh anywhere between 3,000 and 20,000 pounds. However, the average weight of a forklift is typically around 9,000 pounds, about three times the weight of an average automobile. The weight of a forklift can vary depending on its model and design. For instance, smaller forklifts used in factories and warehouses may weigh between 3,000 and 5,000 pounds, whereas larger industrial models may weigh significantly more.

Keep in mind that the weight of a forklift is crucial to its operation as it helps counterbalance the load being lifted. It's also important to consider the surface the forklift will work on, as excessive weight can damage certain flooring or surfaces.
