FAQs About Drum Rollers
United Rentals’ wide selection of drum rollers is designed for efficient compaction of soil, gravel, concrete or asphalt in the construction of roads and foundations. Commonly used in construction and road building applications, our drum roller rentals are ideal for various heavy-duty surface leveling projects. We offer both walk-behind and ride-on rollers, as well as padfoot and smooth drum rollers for rent. Smooth-drum rollers have a flat, smooth-surfaced drum while padfoot rollers have a studded drum, which offers denser and more uniform compaction. Additionally, we feature both single-drum rollers, for increased traction and stability and double-drum models, for more heavy-duty compaction. Our inventory features leading brands, like Multiquip and Wacker Neuson.

Roller compactors come in a wide range of sizes, ranging from smaller walk-behind models to larger, ride-on rollers. For smaller projects, such as sidewalks and pathways, a roller compactor with a 48-inch or 56-inch drum size will be sufficient. However, for large-scale site preparation projects like airports, roadwork and industrial zones, a roller with a 66-inch or 84-inch drum may be better suited.
Roller compactors, also known as rollers, can have a wide range of weights, based on individual make and model specifications. Smaller drum rollers, typically with drum widths of around 35 inches, weigh around 3,500 pounds. Larger rollers can weigh anywhere from 11,000 to 33,000 pounds. Need more help? Smooth rollers are typically used to compact materials like sand, ballast and gravel by using a combination of impact, vibration and static pressure. Alternatively, padfoot rollers are better suited for compacting cohesive soil, like clay and silt. Padfoot rollers are ideal for projects requiring a sturdy foundation, like road construction and earth-fill dam projects.
