In addition to the welding machine, you’ll need the following tools and equipment to ensure your safety. For personal equipment, some recommended items are safety goggles, an auto-darkening welding helmet, welding shoes, welding gloves, a welding jacket and ear protection. For welding tools, some recommended items are measuring tools, welding clamps, a chipping hammer, a wire brush, MIG pliers, a soapstone, a sheet metal gauge and an angle grinder. An air arch gouging torch is used in gouging, joint preparation, crack and pore removal, chamfering, cutting, surface treating and hole piercing of all metals.
Most metals can be welded; however, certain methods of welding yield better results for specific metals. MIG welding is used for steel, stainless steel and aluminum alloys. FCAW welding is used on applications involving carbon steel, stainless steel and low-alloy steels. TIG welding is used for ferrous metals such as steel and nonferrous metals such as aluminum. SMAW welding is practical only on steel, stainless steel and cast iron.
