To thread a pipe, first make sure you have the necessary safety equipment (glasses and gloves) and secure the pipe in the rotational vice, keeping in mind not to apply too much or too little pressure. Cut the tube to the length you need, clearing any excess material with a ream. Lower the die head into position and slowly turn the carriage handle on the side of the threader, moving the pipe forward to create thread lines.
In most plumbing applications, pipe threading is necessary as the threads create a connection that ensures a tight seal and prevents leakage. Consequently, pipe threaders are necessary to create the threads on the ends of pipes.
There are six different types of threads: UN/UNF, NPT/NPTF, BSPP (BSP parallel), BSPT (BSP tapered), metric parallel and metric tapered. They are differentiated by determining the pitch gauge — the distance between the crests of the threads and caliper, which is the diameter of the threads.
