Yes, there are ventilation requirements for direct-fired heaters. They should only be used in large, well-ventilated spaces because direct heating creates carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless gas that can be very dangerous if inhaled.
In direct-fired heating, 100% of the fuel burned is used to supply warmth, making these rental models highly efficient. With an indirect-fired heater, only about 80% of the fuel burned heats the air, so they are less efficient.
