From Stage III to Stage V generators: what are the advantages and disadvantages?

Demand for Stage V generators has been growing substantially in the rental industry in recent years. This is mainly due to the increasing need for cleaner, low-emission power solutions that comply with strict laws and regulations. The transition from Stage III to Stage V is an important change in this regard. But what are the advantages and disadvantages? In this article, we are happy to explain.

The advance of Stage V

From early 2022, the Stage V emission standard for mobile machines will be in effect, with the aim of reducing particulate and harmful emissions. This does not mean that Stage III generators will no longer be used, quite the contrary. However, all new mobile machinery must meet this emission standard. We are seeing rental fleets being gradually renewed, making Stage V generators increasingly available. This reduces costs and, combined with emissions requirements, explains the sharp increase in demand.

Why switch from Stage III to Stage V?

The main reason for switching is environmental impact. Stage V generators use advanced filters and often have after-treatment with Adblue. Adblue is a liquid of demineralised water and urea. Injecting Adblue into the exhaust gas converts much of the CO₂ into pure nitrogen and water vapor; two harmless substances naturally present in our air. This explains why they meet the latest European emission standards. Eventually, everyone will switch to Stage V in order to meet increasingly stringent requirements.

The main advantages and disadvantages

Ultimately, Stage V generators are more sustainable than Stage III generators, due to their reduced particulate and pollutant emissions. Although the fuel consumption of a Stage V generator is higher, the fuel is used more efficiently, which can save costs in the long run. 

Availability is a concern compared to Stage III generators. Stage III generators are currently more readily available because they are part of the existing fleet. That fleet is gradually being supplemented by new Stage V generators. Fortunately, availability is increasing as demand rises and supply adjusts accordingly.

The biggest drawback (for now) is the price. Stage V generators are considerably more expensive than Stage III, which can have a significant impact on your budget. Irrespective, Stage V generators can provide smart, reliable and cost-effective solutions that meet emissions standards, giving you both sustainability and long-term cost benefits.
