In Dunkirk, Northern France, a major construction project required an effective groundwater treatment solution to support the development of a 10-hectare car park for imported light vehicles. Faced with contaminants such as sand, oil, and floating pollutants, the customer needed a system that could adapt to evolving requirements and ensure seamless operations.
The Challenge
Groundwater contamination posed a significant challenge for the customer, who required a system that could efficiently remove impurities before active carbon treatment. The project demanded a solution that could handle variable flow rates of up to 300 m³/h while remaining flexible enough to adapt to changing needs. Additionally, the installation had to be rapid and simple to operate, with technical support available throughout the project. As the construction progressed, the required flow rate tripled, making adaptability a key requirement.
The Solution
United Rentals designed and implemented a custom groundwater treatment solution tailored to the project’s needs. The treatment process began with grit removal and lamellar decantation to separate sediments and pollutants. To ensure a high level of water quality, buffer tanks and bag filtration were integrated before the final activated carbon treatment phase.
To support efficient power management, the system featured a centralised electrical connection, allowing seamless integration with site power or a generator when required. Visual schematics were provided to the customer, enabling adjustments and optimisations throughout the project. The equipment layout was strategically designed to allow for easy maintenance and cleaning without disrupting ongoing operations.
The Results
Over the course of three months, the treatment system successfully processed over 80,000 m³ of water, ensuring that the output met all required filtration standards. The rapid installation and commissioning of the system allowed the project to remain on schedule, while the scalable design accommodated increasing flow rates without compromising efficiency.
