Cooling Tower: Treatment of polluted cooling water

Challenge:
Our customer experiences high levels of pollution in their cooling water basin. The pollution consisted of bacteria, pipeline corrosion and other contaminants. The high levels of pollution within the cooling water basin resulted in a dramatically increased chemical use, high wear and tear of pumps and pipelines, reduced recirculation flow, lower exchange capacity and more purging activities.

Solution:
We engineered a full process to treat the water via a bypass without shutting down the cooling tower or requiring many manual operations. The solution consisted of:

  • A diver was deployed in the basin controlling the suction pipe;
  • An Filtration "Open Top" Tank with a filter screen operated as a strainer;
  • A Lamella Filter Tank separated the slow settling pollution from the water;
  • BakerCorp pumps support the complete fluid transfer process.

Benefits:
The customer improved the efficiency of their cooling tower. This resulted in significant cost savings due to an improved cooling water recirculation, less wear and tear and reduced dosage of cooling water additives.
