Primary Clarifier: Additional pre-treatment capacity
Challenge:
At a refinery a major turnaround was planned. Due to the many additional cleaning activities a much higher waste water flow was expected. Instead of disposing of this additional waste water externally the customer preferred to treat it at the on-site wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). After researching the challenge, a significant increase in the capacity of pre-treatment was devised.
Solution:
United Rentals engineered a solution to add additional settling capacity adjacent to the existing Clarifier, including:
- Additional pump capacity to transfer the incoming waste water.
- A combination of manifolds, control valves and flowmeters to divide the incoming flow evenly over the existing pre-clarifier and the additional capacity.
- A series of Filtration “Open Top” Tanks installed in parallel, equipped with flow breakers, overrun weirs and snorkel pipes to expand the settlement capacity.
Benefits:
Using the United Rentals solution to increase the pre-treatment capacity, all the additional wastewater was treated successfully within the on-site WWTP. Additional costs for temporary containment, transport and external disposal were avoided.

SECONDARY CLARIFIER: MIXED CONTAINMENT OF EXCESS BIOMASS
At a wastewater treatment plant, the Clarifier was producing more sludge than could be processed and dewatered on site.
