Boiler: Storage & treatment of flushing water during cleaning
Challenge:
At a power plant, a maintenance event was required to enable the cleaning of a boiler and its connected lines.
The level of contamination anticipated within the boiler and its pipelines required high pressure cleaning. The resulting flushing water was not permitted to be directly discharged to the on-site wastewater treatment plant.
Solution:
United Rentals engineered an integrated solution to flush the boiler and pipelines with high pressure water and treat the resulting effluent:
- A Double Wall 70 m³ Lined Tank was used to temporarily store the clean water prior to the cleaning and contain the wastewater prior to treatment.
- A 4“ Diesel-Driven High Head Pump transferred clean water from the tank under high pressure towards the boiler system.
- Prior to its discharge to the WWTP, to remove solid contaminants from the effluent released during the cleaning, we utilised a BakerCorp Bag Filter System.
Benefits:
With this integrated package we provided a combined solution for the storage of clean water and wastewater in the same tank. As the tank, pump and filter were mobile, the equipment could be installed close to the boiler, avoiding additional costs for unnecessary hoses & fitting, potential safety risks and loss of system efficiency.
In addition, our solution enabled the reuse of the flushing water multiple times, ensuring we protected the wastewater treatment plant from an overload of pollutants.
