Pioneering sustainable temporary power solutions for building a new plant
INEOS Olefins Belgium started an ambitious project to build a new plant for cracking ethylene; INEOS Project ONE. During this major construction phase, the project faced a critical need for a reliable power supply while awaiting a permanent grid connection.
Temporary power supply with limits
The power solution needed to support four on-site locations, providing power for lighting, substations, and office facilities. Given the environmental regulations, this power solution had to adhere to strict limits on nitrogen and carbon emissions. Therefore, the client requested the use of Stage V generators to meet these requirements. It's no surprise that the client thought this way because Stage V generators are more sustainable than older types. However, since the Stage V generator market is still developing, finding the right fit was a complex task.
A hybrid power approach
Understanding the client's needs and the environmental limits, we proposed a groundbreaking hybrid power solution. This innovative approach combined Stage V generators with advanced battery packs to create a sustainable, efficient, and reliable power system.
We equipped the four on-site locations, each with one generator and a battery pack, with the option for an additional generator to provide power on demand. Using Stage V generators alone can lead to technical issues under insufficient load, but integrating them with battery packs ensured smooth and efficient operation. This hybrid system provided a continuous, 24/7 sustainable power supply. Additionally, the battery packs enabled power on demand, reducing the need for generators to run continuously, thereby conserving fuel and lowering operational costs.
More power needed
During the project, additional power stations were required, because the permanent grid connections were not ready yet. They required additional sets in various locations, including big and small sets for power and light poles at entrance gates, car parks, and heating facilities. By building these sets in the same way as the original plan (combining generators and battery packs), the client had always enough power while still meeting the stringent environmental permits. A win-win situation.
Environmental and operational benefits
This hybrid power solution delivered multiple benefits to INEOS Project ONE. The combination of a single supplier for all power solutions and the reduced generator runtime resulted in significant cost savings, and improved/enhanced the project's overall sustainability.
This project underscores our commitment to developing innovative and sustainable power solutions tailored to our clients' specific needs. By collaborating closely with INEOS Project ONE, we successfully navigated the challenges of providing temporary power under strict environmental regulations, setting a new standard for sustainable construction practices.
