Challenge
Due to seasonal changes, our client faced a critical issue, resulting in their wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) discharge being out of compliance with the yearly average phosphate levels. To address this, they needed to temporarily dose the wastewater to reduce phosphate levels effectively. The customer required a dosing pump that could work flow proportionally with the on-site incoming flow meter and storage for an IBC of ferric sulphate prior to the primary settlement tanks. Despite the site being bunded, chemical safety was of utmost importance due to the difficulty in obtaining chemicals and the necessity to prevent any loss into the drainage system.
Solution
To meet the client's needs, we provided a Chemical Dosing Cabinet (CD-CAB) to safely store the chemical and protect it from the elements. This cabinet also allowed the customer to wire in the 4-20 mA signal from the flow meter and an external call-to-run signal, ensuring they were always aware of when the pump was operational. Inside the CD-CAB, we installed a Chemical Dosing Pump (CD-POLY) to safely and accurately dose the ferric sulphate. Additionally, we utilized dual containment hosing to offer extra protection and prevent any potential chemical loss.
Benefits
This solution provided numerous advantages. The safe storage of the chemical with an alarm system ensured immediate notification in case of any failure. The flow-proportional dosing maintained accurate chemical administration, while the external call-to-run signal kept the client informed about the pump's operation. The dual containment of hoses added an extra layer of security to prevent chemical loss. As a result, the site is now within consented limits for discharge, ensuring compliance and environmental safety.
