Although this technology is not yet widespread, expectations are high. But what exactly does a hydrogen generator entail, and why could it be the future for temporary power? We are happy to explain.
How does a hydrogen generator work?
A hydrogen generator, as the name suggests, uses hydrogen as a fuel to generate electricity. This distinguishes between an internal combustion engine and a fuel cell. Both use hydrogen to generate energy. An internal combustion engine burns the hydrogen, while a fuel cell chemically reacts hydrogen with oxygen from the air to make water. During this process, which is similar to what happens in a battery, electricity is released. The advantage of both technologies is that, unlike traditional fossil fuels, they produce no CO₂ emissions. This makes it a promising alternative for emission-free energy solutions.
Why and why not?
The benefits of hydrogen generators are clear: they are environmentally friendly and can help reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The technology is still expensive and infrastructure for hydrogen is limited. There are also security and storage challenges. So there is still a long way ahead, but the first hydrogen generators are already on the market and we think this technology could have a big impact.
