The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, also known as OSHA, requires that trenches that are 5 feet deep or greater have a protective system, like hydraulic shoring systems. OSHA requires that trenches 20 feet deep or greater need a protective system designed or approved by a registered professional engineer (RPE). OSHA defines a permit-required confined space, also known as a PRCS, as one that has one or more of the following characteristics: a hazardous atmosphere, contains materials with the potential to engulf someone, has an internal structure that could entrap or asphyxiate a person or if the space presents any other recognized serious safety or health hazards. OSHA requires that a permit for a PCRS must be posted at all entrances and available to personnel entering the space.
