The content of this training is intended to provide the HMR training requirements found in 49 CFR Part 172 Subpart H. Refer to the most recent regulations.

This training module includes the HMR orientation and testing required for the handling and transporting of hazardous materials. Certification is complete only after the driver or employee has received function specific and security training from their employer.

The handling and transporting of hazardous materials is regulated by The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration or PHMSA - a division of the Department of Transportation.

The FMCSA regulations support the requirements while the states adopt the regulations and provide enforcement with state and local inspectors. A regulatory reference is provided in each section of this training. By the end of this training session, you should be able to: 

 

• Be able to identify and recognize hazardous materials
• Understand shipper and carrier responsibilities 
• Be aware of shipping papers and how they are used
• Know what the hazardous materials table is and the classes and divisions of hazardous materials
• Identify the requirements for marking and labeling hazardous materials
• Be able to respond to an emergency
• Be knowledgeable on security awareness for hazardous materials
