Environmental Remediation Success Story
United Rentals Fluid Solutions pumping system makes a positive impact on the environment
REMEDIATION CHALLENGE
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) authorized the remediation of a 2.5-mile stretch of portage creek in Kalamazoo, Mich., for PCBs. For the soil to be removed, remediated and then remain clean, the creek had to be damned up in sections and flow had to be bypassed below the soil removal areas. The system had to be flexible enough to handle changing flow rates, noise-level restrictions and 24/7 operations in order to divert flow and avoid flooding.
UNITED RENTALS SOLUTION
The Fluid Solutions pump team designed a custom pumping system to address changing flow rates, noise-level restrictions and continuous operation requirements. The system bypassed the upstream flow, pumping around the continuous mitigation at the worksite and into a creek below. Larger sound-attenuated diesel pumps handled the main flow, while smaller pumps were used as backups, addressing any areas of high groundwater leakage.
RESULTS
The remediation project was completed ahead of schedule and $4 million under budget. Over 19,000 cubic yards of soil and sediment were removed and 5.9 million gallons of water were redirected into the Kalamazoo River. United Rentals' pumping system, combined with our 24/7 support and operational expertise, contributed to the project’s significant time and cost savings.
As a result of the project savings, the EPA began remediating other locations in the vicinity.
