Commercial trucks come in various types, from large dump trucks and utility trucks to smaller pickup trucks, ranging from 1/2-ton to 1-ton options. Commercial trucks are sorted into eight classes based on their gross vehicle weight rating, or GVWR. Classes 1 through 3 are considered light-duty trucks and feature GVWRs ranging from less than 6,000 lbs. to 14,000 lbs., like this 1/2-ton pickup truck. Classes 4 to 6 trucks, like this 4-yard dump truck, have a GVWR of 14,001 lbs. to 26,000 lbs. and are classified as medium duty. Lastly, classes 7 and 8 trucks are classified as heavy duty and have a GVWR of 26,001 lbs. to over 33,001 lbs., like this 4,000-gallon water truck.
