Computer Room Meltdown Avoided Before Midnight
A well-known and reputable mechanical contractor received a call from one of its customers on a Saturday evening. One of the customer's two newly installed 10-ton CRAC (Computer Room Air Conditioner) units had just failed. A service tech was dispatched immediately to troubleshoot. Due to the large heat load from multiple server racks, the sole 10-ton unit still operating was not able to keep the temperatures below 80 degrees.
However, a contingency plan was already in place with United Rentals Climate Solutions to provide emergency temporary cooling.
Recently, a Climate Solutions expert visited the mechanical contractor's office to discuss contingency planning for emergency cooling due to the unlikely event of an after-hour failure of a critical cooling system. Details included after-hour phone numbers and contacts for Climate Solutions team members, different types of cooling units and their required power and proper installation plans for the temporary units based on building and room configurations.
In this case it was predetermined that if any of the CRAC units failed, either (2) 5-ton spot coolers or (1) 12-ton mobile AC unit would need to be deployed. Power for the portable AC units would be sourced from the existing 480V disconnect serving the downed CRAC unit. Condenser air would be vented into the open return and condensate water pumped to existing floor drains. Like clockwork the plan was executed with a Climate Solutions tech delivering and installing the portable AC units and the service tech making the electrical connections.
All before the stroke of midnight!
