FAQs

What are the different types of commercial HVAC systems?

  • The most common type of HVAC systems is a split system, ideal for small commercial spaces like offices, cafes, etc. This type splits the heating and cooling units into two main units. Hybrid split systems tend to be split systems but are utilized to reduce energy costs by switching from gas to electric. Duct-free — or mini-split —systems are ideal for separate buildings or warehouses because they allow independent unit control. Additional common HVAC systems for businesses or commercial spaces include variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems and variable or constant air flow (VAV or CAV) systems. A VRF system is a heat pump that uses a refrigerant in the heating and cooling lines and more than one evaporator connects to a single condensing unit. Another option for larger needs is a VAV or CAV system, which uses a single-duct supply and return setup to keep temperatures at set points. For large warehouse spaces, you might have to add pieces like big fans or evaporative coolers to maintain temperatures.

Should I rent or buy a commercial HVAC system?

  • While it might seem economical to purchase a system, there are a lot of factors to consider that could help you decide between renting or buying. At United Rentals, we provide our customers with emergency response, technical expertise, customization and access to a variety of power and HVAC equipment from top manufacturers.
